A normal ice cream from the shop might set you back anywhere from two to three dollars. If you’re a nut for ice cream you might get one every day. That could add up to around twenty dollars a week you spend on ice cream.

The other great thing about making your own ice cream is that you now know exactly what you’re eating.

No-one wants to blow a load of cash all over a product that barely works. There’s a number of important factors to consider when buying an ice cream maker, so make sure you do go above and beyond in your research.
Keep These Key Facts In Mind
Here’s our list of important things to keep in mind when purchasing an ice cream maker.
Things to keep an eye out for are the: compressor style, capacity, whether your ice cream maker is self refrigerating, how noisy it’s going to be, the churning time, how long and how messy clean up will be and any add-on features your device might have.
If you’re like me you want your ice cream right now. While this mentality hasn’t done much for my waistline, it’s been very good to my sweet tooth, at least the one that hasn’t fallen out yet. A great model of compressor will net you many gallons of ice cream in no time at all. Plus they fantastic in that they cool themselves, they sort of have a tiny refrigerator inside them, which saves time in the long run as you as you won’t need to freeze any canisters ahead of time.
This is a big one in more ways than one. If you want a lot of ice cream you might have to spring for an ice cream maker with a larger capacity. This is a double edged sword however as if you cheaped out and purchase an ice cream maker with a lower capacity, you might end up having to do multiple batches just to feed the whole family. The good news is we’re reviewing ice cream makers here, and we’ll have all the inside oil on which ice cream makers come with the beefiest capacity.
Let’s say you decide not to go with a cheap ice cream maker and go all out on a top of the line, cream of the crop model. This model is likely to be self-refrigerating. This means it will keep the ice cream cold for you, eliminating an annoying and time consuming extra step from the entire process. All the best ice cream makers in 2019 are self refrigerating, so if you’re interested in finding out which one is for you, skip ahead to the review section.
No-one likes a noisy… anything really. As you might have seen in our review of the 8 best vacuum cleaners we’re not the biggest fans of noisy household appliances. While you humble ice cream maker won’t get noise control called on you, it’s best to try to find a quieter one. The good news is while a lot of people do complain about the noise from their ice cream maker, generally it depends on the product you buy. You’re not going to be guaranteed a quiet ice cream maker regardless if it’s costly or less expensive
Good things take time. However your ice cream really shouldn’t have to. The churning time of your ice cream maker is how long it takes to get the serious work of turning a bunch of scattered ingredients into your desert. The models used by big industrial firms can churn out some ice cream in a mere ten minutes. Your household model probably won’t be capable of this. You’re probably going to be looking at anywhere from around half an hour, to a full hour, before your ice cream is ready. Don’t worry though, we go over how long all our selected top models take so you’ll know before you by.
Ask any foodie what they’re least favorite part of whipping up a delicious meal is. They’ll tell you the clean up. The same way you might need to break a few eggs to make an omelette, you might end up with a bit of clean up once you’re done making your ice cream. Higher quality models will often be made of quality materials, such as stainless steel, and you will be able to remove different parts of them to make cleaning up a breeze.
This is the 21st century, you don’t just want an ice cream maker, you want a smart ice cream maker. Lots of top of the line models now come with an assortment of exciting special features that can really make the process a lot easier. These include things like digital displays, with timers on them so you know exactly how much longer you might have to wait. Other cool features might be things we discussed earlier such as removable parts to make cleaning and disassembly easy as pie. Do keep in mind that high-tech equals high-cost so you might end up forking out a bit extra for that little bit extra.

Breville Smart Scoop BCI600
You might know Breville for their coffee makers, but in 2019 they have absolutely killed with their Smart Scoop BCI600. It should go without saying, but this is the best ice cream maker 2019 has to offer. What’s so great about this product?
To start with it’s whisper quiet, meaning that if you wanted to make ice cream at 4am, who’s going to know?
The Breville comes with a wide variety of settings as well, including a number of different timers so you know exactly how long it’s going to be before you’re enjoying your ice cream. On top of that it boasts a mighty capacity, and has removable parts making cleaning a breeze.
If you’re looking to get ice cream that’s as good as what you get at the store, the Breville Smart Scoop BCI600 is a must.
The major downside to this product? It might set you back a bit, and many people have reported that it does have performance issues and Breville’s customer service isn’t the best.
We all get sick of the same thing day-in-day-out, sometimes we might not want ice cream, maybe we’d like a gelato instead. Here’s where the Cuisinart ICE-21 comes in handy, it doesn’t just make ice cream it can also make you a gelato or a sorbet should you want it to.
The Cuisinart ICE-21 has a number of other benefits as well. For one it comes at a much lower price point than the Breville, making it a great option for people on a budget. It’s also super easy to clean.
Best of all this nifty little number is super fast, churning out your ice cream in around half an hour. It does have a couple drawbacks, however.
For one many people report that it’s a little on the noisy side, so probably best to use it during the day. Others have complained that sometimes the ice cream comes out a little runny.
All and all though this is a great option for anyone looking to start making their own ice cream today!
The reigning king of the manual ice cream makers, the Yonanas Maker is a nifty gizmo that even the kids can use. While designed with bananas in mind, the Yonanas maker can turn any fruit you like into a delicious sorbet in no time at tall.
The upside to this product is it is very easy to use. You just insert the bananas into the feeding tube, apply pressure using the weight that comes with the maker and out comes your sorbet, all with barely any noise at all.
The big downside to this product is it’s not what you want if you want an ice cream maker, and it does have a manual component to it.
On the other hand this is easily the cheapest product we’re reviewing, so if you’re in the mood for frequent frozen foods, but don’t want to break the bank, try getting a Yonanas. Plus it has a funny name.
Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker
A powerful product with a simple name, the Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker is another great product from the folks at Cuisinart. A two litre capacity is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the upsides of this beauty.
For one it’s one of the fastest products on the market, with some people reporting it can whip up a tub of ice cream in twenty five minutes. It also comes with a handy spout, so you can throw in any bonus ingredients that take your fancy.
The benefits don’t stop there though. It’s also versatile enough that it can make not just ice cream, but also sorbets and slushies, which is great for anyone with kids.
There are some minor downsides to this product however. For one a product this good doesn’t come cheap, so maybe you might have to save up for a bit in order to get it. Some people have complained it’s a little on the noisy side as well.
Apuro Ice Cream Maker
Built with a top of the line compressor and boasting a big 1.5 litre capacity, the Apuro Ice Cream Maker is just what the doctor ordered. Available at a more modest price this machine has built into it it’s own freezer.
This means there’s no need to pre-freeze any of your ingredients, which saves a lot of time. If you were to buy the Apuro one thing you’d notice pretty quickly is how wonderfully well built it is, with a durable outer shell of stainless steel.
If you want to make a lot of ice cream in a very short space of time this is the product for you. As with anything, it does have its downsides however.
For one while it is cheaper than the Breville or the Cuisinart, it’s still gonna set you back a few hundred dollars.
Like a lot of the ice cream makers on our list, it can get a little on the noisy side as well.
Lello 4080 Musso
A great design goes a long way, and the Lello is easily the coolest looking cooler on our list. But being of Italian design you wouldn’t expect anything different. So what about the performance? In short, it performs.
If you want you ice cream really quickly, this is the ice cream maker for you.
The Lello 4090 Musso can have your ice cream all churned and ready in less than 18 minutes. That’s easily the fastest product on our list. The Lello doesn’t substitute speed for quality however.
The ice cream that comes out comes out in great condition, beautifully smooth. Not only that but the Lello is quiet as a mouse, and very easy to clean.
There are a few drawbacks we need to mention though. For starters this machine doesn’t have the biggest capacity, topping out at about 900 mls, and it can get leaky, so make sure you clean it regularly.
What is Ice Cream Made Out Of?
You may think it’s just sugar and cold, but there’s actually quite a lot more to the humble ice cream than you’d think. The first big fact that is that your ice cream is in fact mostly made up of thin air.
Companies which sell cheap, low-cost confectionery will gas their ice cream up with more air to save a few extra pennies.
Here’s a fun way to tell the difference between tub of ice cream or and a cheaper alternative.
Buy two punnets of ice cream, one at a high price and another at a low cost. Hold them both up. You should find that the more costly ice cream feels just a bit heavier than the cheaper one. This is because of the extra air pumped into the cheap brand.
Here’s some basic chemistry on ice cream. First off do you know what an emulsion is? No?
Okay, so an emulsion is when two different kinds of liquid that normally cannot be mixed, are in fact mixed.
If you have two separate fluids that won’t get get together, you add a third element, in the case of ice cream you’ll mix in “air” and the two liquids will merge into one.
What you need now is what’s called an emulsifier.
An emulsifier will give your ice cream it’s velvety smooth texture. In the case of ice cream, it’s egg yolks.
How Does an Ice Cream Maker Work?
This comes down to two different categories of ice cream maker.
First there’s the automatic, which uses a powerful motor in place of regular human elbow grease.
Then there’s the semi-manual, which uses regular human elbow grease, as well as a bit of extra assistance from the world of engineering.
The mechanics of how the mechanisms in your ice cream maker work are pretty straight forward.
There’s a device known as a compressor inside your ice cream maker.
This compressor is there to create enough force to spin the ice cream, fusing the ingredients together to create ice cream.
Generally if you’re very concerned about price, a cheaper model of ice cream maker will probably be semi-automatic.
However the very best ice cream makers on the market are always almost automatic so if you want a powerful product that makes the best quality ice cream, go automatic.
There you have it folks, the best ice cream makers of 2019.
You never know when a heat wave might strike, that’s why it’s time to start thinking about getting yourself an ice cream maker.
Hopefully you’ll choose one of these great products and be enjoying your own ice cream every sunny day from here on out.
